Finding The Perfect Plus Size Dress
I love dresses! There are so many gorgeous ones to choose from suitable for all body shapes and a variety of occasions. In the women’s plus size market, they have expanded the offering a long way from the traditional mu-mus of days gone by. Now, instead of making a plus size woman looking like a marshmallow clothed in a tent, they play up her femininity (and can at the same time be tailored for the perfect the business look while maintaining a level of feminine style). For very special occasions, a gown can make a lady feel like a celebrity or royalty! Viva la dress!
One of the most flattering dresses currently available is fitted in the bodice, has a high waist that is fitted and then flares into a lovely a-line dress. This style creates a curvy diva look by showing off a nice bosom and the curve into the waist while camouflaging a full tummy or heavier thigh area. It can end at the top of the knee, just below the knee and is a fabulous cut for a maxi dress (more on that later).
Another great style is the “T Dress.” It is usually knee length and flares just above the stomach into an attractive A-line. In this style, nobody will notice thighs that are larger than usual or a fuller tummy. Many dresses force the wearer to try to constantly hold in her stomach, but this style looks great AND is comfortable!
Welcome back Maxi Dress! The long maxi dress is perfect for the beach, or in fancier fabrics for a more formal occasion with a cute little shrug for arm coverage. The snug bodice and empire fit leading into a looser a-line skirt is flattering on nearly EVERY body. Once again, great for camouflaging a fuller tummy and thighs, as well as for women with swelling ankles! They come in great color combinations, and fabrics. Don’t miss out on wearing them while they are popular.
Work dresses are usually more tailored and not fussy. For business occasions, the plain cut tank style dress is the perfect addition to a wardrobe. For women in professional positions, it is important to not show too much skin to be taken seriously. The tank dress usually gives good coverage on top and serves as simple palette to be dressed up with a complimentary jacket. Later, the dress can be dressed up with a more formal jacket for a wedding.
Special Occasion dresses are wonderfully fun to shop for and wear. My favorite designers for plus size dresses are Tadashi, Henry Jackson, and Adrianne Pappell. They all do figure flattering glamour in wonderful shorter sheaths for cocktail and full length gowns for black tie events.
Women hunting for a dress should go for a style that is complimentary to their features and makes them look and feel good. When we ladies are happy with the way we look, our confidence shines through.
