Sheer Drapes – the Easiest Way to Add Magic to Your Rooms
About a year back, I was in the renovation mode. We had been living in the same home for the last 15 years and we had repainted and re-done some of the rooms, as and when we felt the need. The end result was a patchwork house.
So, with mounting excitement I watched the old plaster coming off, curtains being pulled out and old furniture being carted away. We had decided to combine the sitting room and an adjacent nursery so that the renovated sitting room looked spacious and big. We wanted this room to be best room of the house because this was where we spent a good part of our evenings, reading, playing with the dogs and watching TV.
I was delighted when the room was ready for its first coat of paint. It looked BIG – cool and spacious. We had already designed the furniture and had found the perfect place for the sound system and the home theatre. Soon, it was time to choose the window treatment. Here, I got stuck.
For a long time, I had my heart set on blinds. They seemed just the right choice for the minimalist look I was aiming at. But, there was a small problem. The renovated sitting room opened out into portico. There were double French doors and we needed a solution that would give us free access to the portico without having to pull or roll. Blinds were out. But, I still wanted something that did not take up much space while creating an illusion of airiness and openness.
That’s when I discovered sheer drapes!
Sheer drapes are lightweight, almost see-through fabric that you can hang over windows. They are excellent for the sitting rooms and parlors where you need lots of natural light. Sheers have a translucency that is almost magical and they are so light that they practically swish in the light breeze all the time, making the room look cheerful and airy.
I chose light sheer drapes and combined them with heavy window drapes. The light color added to the illusion of a large open space, and the self print on the sheers gave these drapes a very rich and luxuriant look. Since the single layered sheer drapes we used were quite translucent, privacy was a problem particularly in the night when the lights went on inside the house. Hence the idea of double drapes. The double curtains did take up some extra space but we could achieve two totally different looks in the morning and evening, without compromising on privacy or beauty.
Sheer drapes fall in straight, soft lines. They allow the light in nicely while giving you a small amount of privacy. The simple beauty and classy elegance of sheer drapes impart a delicate look to the entire room. Their subtle designs and soft texture enhance the beauty of your window design.
And they allow the room to reflect the changing moods of the day, which is what I love most about them.
