Although the film about Elle Woods, a sorority girl who follows her boyfriend to Harvard Law School and quickly proves she is much smarter than her blonde locks and pink outfits convey, was a smash hit, the stage version is quickly eclipsing it in popularity! The list of creators behind Legally Blonde the musical reads like a who’s who list in Broadway, ranging from Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray), book writer Heather Hach (Freaky Friday), scenic designer David Rockwell (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), composer and lyricist Laurence O’Keefe (Batboy) and Nell Benjamin (Sarah, Plain and Tall).
The tour cast for Legally Blonde is just as impressive as the show’s batch of creators! Elle Woods is played by stage veteran Becky Gulsvig, who has also appeared in Peter Pan and Hairspray. The blonde (duh!) actress/singer was bitten by the Broadway bug in fourth grade, when she starred in a school production of Annie. After graduating from high school ahead of her class, Gulsvig moved to the Big Apple to try her hand at a stage career and never looked back. Gulsvig served as an understudy for Laura Bell during the musical’s pre-Broadway run and took over as Elle Woods once the show hit the road.
The Moorhead, Minn. native doesn’t appear to share many similarities with her SoCal stage persona, but told the Palm Beach Daily News, “I wouldn’t say I’m nothing like Elle. I’m half like her. I’m not a high-heels, pretty-in-pink, super-girlie. But we have the same spirit. We follow our dreams, and we’re true to ourselves.” When playing the perky sorority girl on stage, Gulsvig wears bright clothing from designers like Nanette Lepore, Diane Von Furstenberg and Ralph Lauren, but don’t expect to see the actress dolled up when not on the stage, as she told the Palm Beach Daily News that she is more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl!
Legally Blonde‘s touring cast also features D.B. Bonds (whose Broadway credits include parts in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera) as Emmet Richmond (the dreamy law assistant played by Luke Wilson in the film), Natalie Joy Johnson as Paulette Bonafonte (the lovable hair dresser played by Jennifer Coolidge in the film) and Michael Rupert (whose Broadway credits include Falsettos—for which he earned a Tony nod—and Sweet Charity—for which he received a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award) as Professor Callahan (the shady professor/lawyer played by Victor Garber in the film).
Warner Huntington III (played by Matthew Davis in the film), the boyfriend Elle follows to Harvard, is played by Jeff McLean (an original member of the Las Vegas Company of Spamalot) while his stuffy girlfriend Vivienne Kensington (played by Selma Blair in the film) is played by Megan Lewis (who appeared in the Broadway production of Grey Gardens).
