Skin Care Tips – Staying Skin-Safe in the Sun
When the summer months arrive it is only natural that we want to get outdoors and enjoy it for as long as we can and, to some degree, exposure of sunshine in reasonable amounts is beneficial as it can be used as a means of helping to lift your mood and producing vitamin D within your skin. However, if you are going to be spending more than 20 minutes within the suns rays it is vital that you always use a sunscreen, this is because spending an excess amount of time in the sun is very harmful so you need to ensure you are protected against ultraviolet rays as a means of reducing the risk of sunburn and your risk of skin cancer.
There are a number of ways in which you are able to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the suns rays, the most obvious of these being through the use of sunscreen. All sunscreens have what is known as SPF; a sun protection factor. When you are choosing your sunscreen, it is vital that you always opt for one with an SPF factor of 15 or higher. The SPF determines the sunscreens ability to block out harmful rays and the higher the SPF the more protection you have. You don’t, however, have to opt for the most expensive sunscreen on the market as it has been proven that the cheaper brands can be just as effective. What is more important than the brand you buy, is how you actually apply your sunscreen. To get the most benefit out of it, you should apply it between 15 and 30 minutes of going out into the sun and ensure it goes onto skin that is clean and dry then simply rub it in lightly while using a generous amount. You should then re-apply it every two hours as chances are you have probably washed, rubbed, or sweated it off. The last point I am going to make here is the fact you should always put this on before you place anything on such as make-up or moisturizer.
Sunscreen, however, is best when combined with other methods of staying safe in the sun, such as through what you wear. Thanks to the recent summer fashion trends, it has never been easier and of course more fashionable to cover up in the hot summer months. Take for example hats, wide brimmed sun hats shield the face, neck, ears, and chest from the sun and they are bang-on this season’s trend, want another example? Leggings, they are a runway staple and look fantastic under dresses and tunics even in hot weather. This makes them the ideal way of protecting from UV rays.
One last fashion trend that is perfect to protect against the suns rays are long dresses. Maxi dresses are everywhere this summer and can be worn day or night. They are perfect for protecting your legs and stomach from sunburn.
One of the main things to keep in mind when you are out in the sun is to not forget how strong the sun can actually be, remember it doesn’t have to feel hot to be able to cause damage to your skin.
Taking precautions, such as the ones above, will minimize your risk of sunburn, which in itself reduces your risk of developing skin cancer. Precautions against the sun will also mean that your skin doesn’t prematurely age so you will hold back the effects of wrinkles as well. Basically, no matter how long you are in the sun for don’t take any chances, make sure you protect your skin and minimize the risk to yourself.
