Tubers
Aponogeton undulatus is also known as Apontogenton stachyosporus. It has light green leaves that can grow up to 15 cms in length and the whole plant about 40 cms. The true species do not have floating leaves but it seems that some hybrids do have them. White flowers are produced and this plant will tolerate most water conditions.
It can grow in shady conditions but does prefer a brighter light. Medium hard to hard water with a temperature range of 22 to 28 degrees centigrade and pH range of 6.8 to 7.2 are the preferred conditions.
Madagascan Lace Plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis) is also known as the Madagascan lace leaf or lattice leaf. It originates from Madagascar and is a popular choice. It is a perennial plant that has tuberous rhizomes about 3 cm in diameter. It has oblong shaped leaves that can reach over 50 cms in length and up to 16 cms wide.
The leaves are unusual in that they appear as a lattice with no solid leaf matter in the holes of the lattice. Flowers produced can protrude above the water surface and there appear to be several sizes of this plant in circulation so they may be smaller than the measurements given above.
Informed opinion suggests that it will thrive better in moderate to bright light with the water temperature in the range of 15 to 26 degrees centigrade and the pH between 5 and 7.5. If you want to cultivate the plant you will probably find it is quite difficult.
Cuttings
The Green Cabomba (Cabomba caroliniana) has fine feathery leaves, is better to have soft water and bright light and may be a bit difficult to grow. The Giant Hygrophilia (Nomaphilia stricta) has large broad leaves, is useful as sites for spawning and for providing a safe haven. They do better with water that is slightly hard and with a good strong light. Keep good conditions in your aquarium to stop algae building up.
The Red Rotala (Rotala macandra) has soft delicate leaves that could easily be damaged if they are situated in strong water currents. In order to maintain the red color this plant needs bright light on a regular basis. A temperature range of 22 to 28 degrees centigrade and pH range of 5 to 6.5 is suitable. Fast growing, the Rotala likes to go up to the surface and then goes on to grow with leaves floating at the surface. The leaves appear to get bigger and redder the nearer they get to the light.
