Types of Carpet Repair

At some point or another you will definitely come across the necessity of making a carpet repair. Unless you want to hire a company that deals with carpet repair, you must have the proper knowledge before beginning to do the job by yourself. There are two main types of carpet repair that you can do. First you can re-stretch your carpet or, second, you can cut and plug.

Re-stretching is used when you want to make your carpet look as new again. This will practically remove the wrinkles on its surface and will make your carpet last longer. Before doing this operation you will need to rent a knee kicker. Then you will have to unfasten the carpet from the tack strip. The knee kicker is used to kick the carpet in one direction. After doing so, make sure the tack strip is holding the carpet down, and kick in the other direction. Make sure again that the tack strip is securing the carpet in place and see if there is any excess that needs to be trimmed away. You can then vacuum your carpet as usual without worrying about the waves in your carpet getting in the way. Voila the re-stretch is done.

Cut and plug is a carpet repair type that is a little bit more complicated. It helps you repair stains, burns or other damages that were done to your carpet. The main idea is that you have to cut a patch that matches your carpet and to replace the damaged area with it. You need a few things before starting, like a knife, some carpet tape, a fine crochet or fine knitting needle, scissors and a glue gun with glue sticks. Once you have them all, use your crochet or knitting needle to separate the pile around the damage area ( you should be able to from a square or rectangular shape around the damaged area cut out the area that was stained or burned by following the separated rows in the carpet in order to make sure you’ll make a fine cut. The most difficult part is to find a patch that matches your carpet. Pay attention to how worn the carpet is. Once you have the patch, cut it out so that it matches the damaged area. Mark the direction of your carpet on the piece you have removed on the back of the carpet so that you know which way the direction of the pile has to go (to check for pile direction if your lost, you can look at the shading when stroking the grain of the fibers back and forth). Put the tape on the under pad or surface area that the carpet is on ( for glue down carpets just adhere directly to the concrete or wood floor) and then use the glue gun to glue the new piece in place and try to place it correctly into the prepped area. Once you positioned it correctly, apply some pressure for the hot glue to stick to both surfaces (being careful as to not create glue seepage through the seams).

Your carpet repair is almost done. You just have to place some heavy objects to keep it flat for a few minutes until the glue cools down. Keeping the carpet flat will make it look more like the original carpet. After a couple of days, the carpet will start to blend in nicely especially if it is a traffic area where it is being walked on all the time.

This might sound easy, but in practice you might get stuck at some point. If this happens, don’t worry because you can always turn to professionals for help.
