Lolita Dress And Famous Stars
The most well known celebrity proponent of Lolita fashion has to be American singer and former No Doubt front woman Gwen Stefani. Gwen was so strongly inspired by the Harajuku girls that they have become a ubiquitous presence in her work. She employs an entourage of four young Japanese fashionistas, who she calls Love, Angel, Music and Baby to accompany as her muses, adding an air of mystique to the artist. The girls can also be seen in Stefani’s videos, for example rescuing her from jail in the video for The Sweet Escape, though they are never heard speaking when they attend her TV interviews with her.
Gwen makes frequent references to her appreciation of Harajuku girls and their unique style in her work, and called her range of fragrances “Harajuku Lovers”, each sold in a bottle with a cute, anime inspired dolly figurine of one of her Tokyo posse as the bottle top.
In the video for Wind it Up, Gwen is seen wearing a very cute Lolita style cupcake dress, and the Lolita influence can also be seen in the designs for her LAMB fashion label.
Gwen Stefani is not the only American music star with a fondness for Lolita style, however. Controversial Courtney Love, widow of Kurt Cobain and lead singer with Hole, is also a fan. Whilst Courtney does not adopt the Lolita dress herself, as a former resident of Tokyo she is a confessed admirer of the look and the culture, and commissioned her own Manga style cartoon.
A star who is often seen wearing outfits with a hint of Lolita is pop phenomenon Lady Gaga, though this is just one of the many influences that go into the cocktail that makes up her innovative style. When Lady Gaga met the queen of England, she appeared in a bright red PVC Victoriana inspired dress which was as striking as it was shocking, and clearly fell into the Gothic Lolita lineage despite its modern, funky twist.
The use of the traditional and whimsical yet cultish and modern Lolita style by these stars allows them to evoke a childlike, Alice in Wonderland feel whilst still keeping their looks and the imagery in their videos fresh and cool. As a further example, in the fairytale inspired video for Brick by Boring Brick by rock band Paramore, lead singer Haley can be seen in a very cute Lolita dress with dolly shoes and ankle socks.
