American Idol Review – 3.9.2010 – Season 9 Episode 19
On American Idol it was the ladies battling it out to get into the top 12. And from the performances it seems as if none of the ladies really want to win it. In what has been the most karaoke season thus far the ladies just don’t seem to have what it takes, other than Crystal Bowersox. Simon definitely had it right when he described Paige Miles’ performance as what you would hear in a Holiday Inn in 1974.
As the season continues on it’s also becoming more and more obvious that hiring Ellen was a huge mistake. She’s way too nicey nice to the contestants and she comes off as so unsure of herself that it’s almost uncomfortable to watch. I thought Paula was bad, but Ellen is like a fish out of water. I’m not sure how many more times I can take Ellen saying “I like you” or “you’re great” even after someone gives a sucky performance.
And since its Oscar Week I’ve got to mention that Katelyn Epperly and her blonde curly hair reminded me of Glenn Close’s psycho character on Fatal Attraction. But that’s where the comparison’s end as I don’t think we’re going to see Ms. Epperly up on stage accepting any awards anytime soon. Anyway, aside from Crystal Bowersox I think the rest of the ladies are in way over their heads. And let’s give Crystal some credit…she sang that Tracy Chapman song Give Me One Reason and I didn’t even change the channel. I remember hearing that song every five minutes on the radio when I was in high school, and in countless elevators since, which is why to this day I take the stairs.
Other than Crystal none of the ladies put on a show stopping performance. This year’s American Idol has turned into the 2010 version of the 80′s talent show Star Search, where the top talent was cruise ship worthy at best. And speaking of Tracy Chapman, hopefully the rest of the ladies and guys can give me one reason to not change the channel to something more entertaining like C-SPAN or the Weather Channel.

The Other Sister [VHS] $6.95 Filming a love story centered on two mentally challenged people is a touching idea, one that’s been attempted in films such as Benny and Joon and even, to a certain extent, As Good As It Gets. The Other Sister is another addition to the genre, a well- acted comedy-drama centering on the romance of Carla (Juliette Lewis) and Daniel (Giovani Ribisi) and throwing in some general family angst as a sec… |
