Denim dresses up for tough times
Teamed with gold stitching, jewellery and long skirts, denim is moving away from the traditional jeans catsuit look and is being sold as evening wear.
David Jones designer buyer Ms Jane McMahon said denim reflected people’s desire for quality and value for money in clothes in today’s economic climate.
“But the bright colors are still there. I don’t think they will ever disappear in a country like zentai bodysuit this,” she said.
1982 resurgence
Fashion pundits say denim enjoyed the same resurgence during the 1982 recession, when people returned to clothes made of the dependable, long-lasting fabric.
Denim was the centre-piece in the finale of this year’s David Jones spring/summer fashion collection, launched last night.
Adelaide designer Harry Watt, who designed the clothes for the finale, has used denim with jewelled trims for shorts, costume spiderman, skirts, shirts and jackets.
Ms McMahon said some of the evening wear could also be worn during the day, which suited buyers who were looking for value.
