You don’t have to look too hard to find someone with an angel tattoo of some description. They are without doubt one of the most popular choices for tattoo designs. By and large, you will most frequently find angel tattoos on women but there are variations of angel tattoos that are for men.

Well, the religious connotations are the most obvious reason. Angels strongly represent images of spirituality and a closeness to God, this could be why they are popular amongst people of the Christian faith. Angels also represent purity and goodness, though we may not realise it we all like to view ourselves as inherently good. The stereotypical angel is a positive image of kindness and love and it is no wonder many of us want to associate ourselves with this image. An angel tattoo could also be a reference to a guardian angel, someone who is looking out for us or a view of ourselves as a guardian angel figure.
After all, tattoos are very personal and usually reflect the personality of the person. On the flip side some people may get an angel tattoo because it represents innocence and purity and the person who gets the tattoo may not consider themselves to have much of either. In fact, it is the case that many people with angel tattoos are no more angelic than the next person. It is all about how we see ourselves and how we want to be seen by others.
What different types of angel tattoos are there?
- Memorial Tattoos – A number of angel tattoo designs are had in memory of a loved one and the concept that they have become an angel in heaven. This kind of angel tattoo is one which is common among men. This angel represents something or someone real to them and is a symbol of that. They are not a representation of the mythical being or any of its connotations.
- Angel Wing Tattoos- These too can be found on men. Angel wing tattoos usually appear as you would expect. Two large angel wings on the back can make the person who has them appear like an angel.
- Fallen angel tattoos – Angel tattoos are not always full of sweetness and light. Some people want to portray the part of their personality which is not at all angel like in the traditional sense. As the story goes, the devil was an angel who was cast to hell for challenging God’s authority and being generally, very naughty. Just as we can alter our appearances greatly but essentially look the same, the same applies to angel tattoos. Though the idea of an angel is instantly recognisable and carries a lot of meaning, the appearance of the angel can be altered to represent something which is personal to everyone. This could be the key to the popularity of angel tattoos.
